At Dorothy House we have a whole team of people supporting the clinical side of the Hospice. One part of this is the Fundraising team – we rely on donations to fund our care, so this team is integral to the work we do.

As a Community & Events Fundraiser, you will look after fundraisers across our patch, as well managing key Dorothy House fundraising events such as the Midnight Walk and our brilliant Santa and Elf Run. No two days are the same in this people-focused, fast-paced environment. And you will be safe in the knowledge that every penny you help raise goes towards vital patient care.

Dan Varley, who works in our Winsley office as a community and events fundraiser, tells us about his varied and busy role

What did you do before working for Dorothy House?

I was working for a local hospital charity as a community fundraiser, although as part of a much smaller team. I did that for about four years; two normal and two pandemic. I learnt so much, especially about looking after supporters and working with them to make the most out of their fundraising.

What made you want to work for Dorothy House?

Once I decided it was time for a new challenge, the job opportunity at Dorothy House was too good not to go for! I really wanted to try my hand at larger scale events, and I could see the Hospice had a great selection of innovative activities that the role was heavily involved in. I could also see how important the cause is to the local community, and it was clear that the work of other teams across the Hospice made the lives of the fundraisers that bit easier!

What is the best thing about your job?

Certainly the day-to-day variety. One day I’ll be in the Hospice doing bits and bobs and communicating with fundraisers from my patch, the next day I’ll be out meeting with contacts in Bath and then the day after I’ll be running a major event, bringing in high levels of income to support Dorothy House’s work! I do have a lot on my plate but the support from my colleagues and other teams across the Hospice make it a dream. We make sure we share the load and all keep an eye on each other. I feel so well supported and can always ask for help.

What would you say to someone considering working for Dorothy House?

Dive in head first! Working here is great. It’s a brilliant team and we’re all working to achieve the same thing. Every single person is valued here for the work they do. There is plenty of room to develop and you’ll be appreciated as an individual, regardless of your role. It’s just a wonderful place to work!
